Mary Alexander
Red Porsche 550 Spyder

Of course Mary didn’t have much choice with her Spyder since it was gift from her husband. She admits loving the little car, however, and especially likes the simplicity of it. We speculate too that the arrest-me red color probably doesn’t hurt either in garnering attention anywhere she goes.
Like her brother’s car, Thunder Ranch powered the Spyder with brand-new Zero-Mile Scat motor measuring 2275cc in displacement. Unlike Tim’s car, TR specified a milder Engle 110 cam and some mild porting on the heads and fit the little air-cooled four banger with a pair of Weber 44IDF carburetors. The engine drives through a Transworks-modified four-speed transaxle that has been turned around and the ring gear flipped to use it in a mid-engine configuration. It has a final drive ratio of 3.88:1. Her engine also benefits from a Thunder Ranch proprietary 911-style fan shroud, alternator and fan; full-flow oiling with a deep sump, remote filter, 96-row cooler, breather box and electric fan and lots of stainless-braided lines and aircraft-style AN fittings.

Three Porsche-styled VDO instruments and three switches are all that are mounted in the clean dash. A Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel and a Brandwood cable shifter round out the car’s controls. The Spyder-style bucket seats are upholstered in smooth leather and the floors are covered with square-weave carpeting.
While the exterior of the two cars is similar, Mary’s Spyder was fitted with a pair of removable headrest fairings with upholstered pads. The cars also differ a bit in badging as Mary’s car has a “Spyder” indices on its flanks that Tim’s doesn’t. Her car also has the Speedster style windshield and wipers and the Thunder Ranch quick-fill fuel cap like the original car. Mary’s car also has amber turn signals while Tim’s are clear.
Mary’s Spyder is also outfitted with 16-inch Porsche 911 Fuchs wheels (sixes up front and sevens out back) which are completely polished and wrapped with Falken directional 205 front and 225 rear tires.
